Following an investigation with EJF the New York Times and International Herald Tribune have run front page stories highlighting how Europe demand for Seafood is driving pirate fishing. It is time for Europe to act. The European Commission has now presented its Proposal for a Council Regulation establishing a Community system to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. EJF strongly supports this action by the Commission, and commends the Proposed Regulation as a landmark step towards effectively combating pirate fishing. It now up to the Fisheries Ministers of the 27 Member States to make this essential Regulation into EU law, followed by rapid implementation and enforcement. EJF today met with representatives of the UK government as part of the consultation process, and pressed for UK support for the Proposed Council Regulation. You too can do your bit to make sure that this landmark and vital Proposal is adopted. Click here to Take Action and send a letter that will go to the 27 European Fisheries Ministers outlining your concerns and pressing them to adopt and implement the IUU Regulation. We have written a template letter, but please feel free to adapt this with your personal comments and concerns.
